What can I expect the first time I come?
For your first appointment, you will bring the intake paperwork with you or come 15 minutes early to complete the paperwork in office. Your fee for the service will be collected at the window. In the session, we will discuss confidentiality and what brings you to counseling. You will be asked questions about many different areas of your life. This helps Lauren to identify potential areas of strengths and improvement. In future sessions, we will identify treatment goals and begin working to accomplishing them. An example of a treatment goal is: “I want to go to Azalea Festival in Downtown Wilmington without having a panic attack.”
How many counseling sessions do most clients attend?
It depends. Your therapist will make a recommendation of how many sessions will be needed. Our aim is to help you accomplish your goals and decide when you no longer need the support of counseling.
Two key factors set up clients for success:
1) attend your scheduled appointments and
2) do the homework.
There are 168 hours in a week and counseling will only be one hour of that. Homework is a way to bridge the gap between counseling sessions, solidify new information and connect you with resources to help you meet your goals. Therapy is an investment in you and your therapist time. It is important to give yourself permission to focus on this time of self-improvement.
How do I know if it’s a good fit?
The most important thing about therapy is that you are comfortable with your therapist. You have taken the first step to getting better and whatever Lauren can do to support that, she will. Please ask as many questions as you like. This is a big decision and you want to make sure it is a good fit prior to making the commitment. For some people this may lead to a referral to connect you with an appropriate professional that maybe a better fit.
